Cocker Spaniel - Maple The Cocker Spaniel - Small - Adult
Maple was rescued from a high kill shelter after being hit by a scooter. A local vet took her in and helped her heal. Fortunately for this Cocker she only had a fractured jaw and is now looking for a forever home. She is so sweet and is a bundle of energy. Seems to love other dogs and people!
* Leash Manners - Maple has no leash manners. She is a puller. Nose is to the ground and she is in constant 'hunting mode'.
* Crate/House Training - Crate trained 100% but did have an accident one time in the house. You have to walk her for a while until she does her business.
* Socialization - Good with kids of all ages. Gets along well with other dogs.
* Energy Level and Exercise - Very high energy. She has a hard time settling down but once she wears herself out she will lay down on the floor.
* Daily Structure and Schedule - She is crated during the day while I'm at work and the kids are at school. Other than that she is always out free in the apartment. She eats dinner around 5-5:30 pm of Nature's Recipe Easy Digest Food. Later she'll have a morning snack of Milk Bone Healthy Favorites. At night she goes to bed with the family between 9:30-10:00pm and sleeps in bed with me.
* Temperament - Very sweet and loving. Tail wags constantly. Very affectionate. Loves to play with toys but will shred any stuffed toy.
* Obedience Training - She knows Sit.
* Behaviors - She will pace back and forth for long periods of time and also seems to dig at imaginary dirt. Not sure if this is some sort of anxiety.
* Personality Quirks - She has the most adorable puppy dog eyes and long girly lashes. Very soft fur. Doesn't seem to shed. Very quiet. Hardly barks. Likes to sit in front of sliding glass door and look outside. Would make a great jogging companion.
* Ideal Home - Would make a great family pet. Not recommended in a elderly home due to her high energy level. I recommend a home with a fenced in yard so she can roam free to burn off her energy. She needs an active lifestyle with regular walks or runs.
Like many dogs in the South, Maple is heartworm positive, but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog. We are treating her with monthly heartworm preventative, our preferred method. Many heartworm positive dogs go on to lead long and healthy lives.
PRBJ treats ALL of our dogs with monthly Heartworm preventative. Heartworms are transmitted to dogs via mosquitoes. Humans do not contract heartworms. Heartworm positive (HW+ ) dogs, such as Noah, are treated with the recommended slow kill method, using monthly HW preventative as it is gentler on the animal?s system than the more invasive injection method. Most dogs that are Heartworm positive can lead healthy, normal lives if the worms are caught early and treatment began. There are different options to treat HW and new owners may choose to redirect their type of treatment with direction of their vet. All HW+ dogs have a HW slow treatment info sheet in their adoption folder which will be provided to new owners.
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, Cocker Spaniels are cheerful, sweet, and sensitive. The Cocker Spaniel is respectful of its master's authority without much challenge. Merry and endearing. A happy tail-wagger. Gentle and trusting, with average intelligence. They are lively, playful and devoted. Cockers will do okay in an apartment if they are adequately exercised, and are fairly active indoors. A small yard is sufficient. The American Cocker Spaniel is smaller than the English Cocker Spaniel and has a different conformation. The name 'Cocker' comes from the woodcock, a game bird these spaniels flushed particularly well. Today, the Cocker Spaniel serves primarily as a companion and glamorous show dog. It can also be used for hunting, tracking, retrieving, watchdogging and agility. They have a life expectancy of 12-15 years.February 15, xxxx, 9:20 pm
